Applying for a Mongolian visa in Beijing

One of the mandatory to do’s while on the road is applying for visa’s. Some countries are a piece of cake whilst others prove to be more challenging. After doing some research online we decided to apply for our Mongolian visa in Beijing and were pleasantly surprised at how simple it was.

From (hostel) door to door it took us a total of 3 hours. The Mongolian visa application center (booth) is located at 2 Xiushui Beijie. Take subway line 1 and get off at the Yong anli stop, exit from Exit A which is the corner of the Silk street market. Exit the building and turn right, turn right again and turn left at the first left, another left and follow the street bend to the right. The center is open from 9:00 to 12:00 Monday, Wednesday and Friday. Get there early and be prepared to stand in line and wait.

You can either download the visa form from the Mongolian embassy website or walk over to the booth and ask for a form. We were not aware of this and were approached by a couple of Mongolian men selling forms for 10 yuan each and they were well prepared with pens, glue sticks and smiles. The form was very straightforward. There were questions asking for your host and address in Mongolia but we just wrote down a guesthouse address in Ulan bataar. The line was long so we were happy to make it before the center closes for the day. There are stories of people being sent away once the opening hours were over.

Once it was our turn, the clerk briefly glanced at our forms and passports, made some notes and asked if we wanted normal or express service. Normal was 7 days and express was 1 day. We chose for express and was given a pink slip for the visa pick up the next day between 16:00 – 17:00. For payment we had to go to the Bank of China located 5 minutes away to deposit the money. From the center you need to walk further down the road and turn left towards the big main road. At the main road Jianguomenwai Dajie, turn right till you come across an underground road crossing. Cross the road and you will see the Bank of China. At the bank a clerk will help you with the payment. Express service visa is RMB 495 and you need to pay RMB 10 for the bank service as well.

The following day all you need to do is hand in both your embassy and bank receipts and make sure to double check your visa.

Like we said, quite simple!
